Sewing takes patience...

I love the mod style but I can't find enough mod clothing...even from the local thrift stores. I recently bought a dress pattern and decided to try making a mod style dress. Here's the finished product. 3 weeks and with a few bandaids I finally finished it! Maybe I will try looking for a sewing machine and try to make another one quicker. Also its too small for me so I either have to lose weight or sell it. Maybe I'll just keep it as my inspiration piece to either lose weight or make more!

Essentials

As we all gear up for the holidays we start preparing for the holiday parties. We start rummaging through our closets in a panic trying to figure out what we can put together that we haven't worn before. If you are like me, I am never the same weight as I was the year before. So all the dresses you bought after the holidays last year because it was on sale just won't cut it. So what's my advice? Always have a short black dress with a tie waist in your closet and of course a hot pair of high heels to go with anything. Keep a nice set of pearl earrings and a little black clutch. A long or medium lenght black trench coat is also a must. Simplicity goes a long way.

Sandy

The east coast suffered from a terrible storm. My prayers go out to the families who lost their homes and some, their loved ones. Times like these make you appreciate what you have. Please donate or contribute your time and let's help rebuild the Jersey shore and Staten Island, NY.

Choice

I Choose...

to live by choice, not by chance
to be motivated, not manipulated
to be useful, not used
to make changes, not excuses
to excel, not compete
I choose self-esteem, not self pity
I choose to listen to my inner voice, not to the random opinion of others.

Personal Growth

It's a thin line between success and failure, at least to me there is. I've been going through lots of physical, emotional, and spiritual changes. Sometimes I get carried away with my thoughts and get too involved that I feel that I am no longer in this world or so to speak. Trying to weed out the negative forces in my life and instead focusing on my goals, what I want to accomplish and how I want my family to live so that we can leave this world with something positive rather than just taking. Although I may sound very confident, I am no where near where I would like to be. But what I do know is where I don't want to be, whether that is job-wise or even just the negative person that I was years ago. I have a purpose, we all do. The journey is trying to figure out what that is.

So I know that this absolutely has nothing to do with thrifting...but in a way it all relates to one's mind set. We can choose to be thrifty or choose to buy materials that we don't really need. When I go thrifting, I ask myself..."Do I NEED this? or do I WANT this?" We don't need the wants. They are what distracts us from what we need.

So my friend, I leave you with this....

I miss you friend...

Okay, so I know I've been away for a while...a couple of months to be exact. It's not because I gave up on my blog or have nothing to blog about...the truth is that I forgot my password!! Seriously, I had a mental block and recovering and figuring it out was a bit of a challenge. This is what happens when your computer is constantly hacked or a virus makes contact...you need to change your passwords every month and if you pick one that is so impossible for hackers to figure out, sometimes it's even impossible for you to remember and figure it out! Ha!

Hopefully this doesn't happen again and with my new smart phone, I'm making sure that I don't forget again.

So hopefully you guys understand and have not abandoned me or removed me from your bookmark because I am back!!

Laurel's Loft is Open for Business!

Laurel House is dedicated to the vision of ending domestic violence in each life, home, and community.

The mission of Laurel House is to provide safe haven for abused women and their children, to raise public awareness about domestic violence and to advocate for social change against domestic violence.

Laurel House is a comprehensive domestic violence agency serving individuals, families and communities throughout Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The agency's name was selected because of the beauty of the laurel, Pennsylvania's state flower. It represents a victory for people who have taken the courageous first step of reaching out to Laurel House to support them in their efforts to build a violence free life for themselves and their children.

The agency's first program, a domestic violence shelter for abused women and their children, was founded by the Women's Center of Montgomery County in 1980. In 1981, Laurel House was incorporated as an independent nonprofit organization.

Laurel House's shelter has long been known as a safe place to heal. However, over the past 31 years, our programs have expanded to include many other needed services and supports. Today, in addition to our 24-hour hot line and shelter, Laurel House offers transitional housing, medical advocacy, legal advocacy, community counseling and support groups, children's programs, support to law enforcement, and expanded community education and prevention efforts.  Several years ago, Laurel House opened Marian's Attic, an "upscale resale" thrift shop in King of Prussia. The shop helps raise needed funds to support our shelter and counseling programs, while also helping raise awareness about domestic abuse.

Laurel House services are available to male and female victims of abuse and their children. If you are in an unsafe situation because of domestic violence or if you would like to speak with a counselor about available services, please call our Hot line at 1-800-642-3150.

Now about the Thrift Store....

Just opened in March 2012, Laurel's Loft is our 2nd resale shop. Located in the Pennwood Plaza at 1801 N. Broad Street, Lansdale PA 19446, all proceeds from sales at the store benefit Laurel House and our domestic violence programs. Laurel's Loft has a wide selection of clothing for the whole family, jewelry, accessories and small household items. We invite you to come into the shop to browse, while at the same time supporting victims of domestic violence and their loved ones.
Items are always needed to ensure that our shop is stuffed-filled with great, quality items.

More Gardening...

I wanted to take advantage of the nice weather we had over the weekend. So I did plant more flowers around the house and mulched a bit with the hubby. It's so rewarding to see how nice my flower beds turned out! Hopefully the flowers stick around for a while, guess it all depends on the weather.
Side note: Still trying to find stones for my glow in the dark project...looking for some really big ones like the stones pictured at the top of my blog. Any ideas where I can find some??
